Background: WhenThe Kooralbyn Resort, around 100km inland from the Gold Coast, was purchased by a Japanese golf resort operator, a major redevelopment of the resort was undertaken. Anew 4 star hotel comprising 3 restaurants, a health club, a convention center was commissioned, along with major upgrades to the existing golf courses, tennis center, equestrian facillities and villa accomodation units. The new hotel was to feature the innovative rammed earth construction technique to emphasise its place as part of the surrounding Australian bush landscape. We started our collaboration with the resort developer before construction commenced. The Brief: One of many briefs for this client was, to develop a sign system for the new hotel to reflect its essential character and provide relevant documentation and prototypes for the tender process. Strategy: As with other aspects of this project our strategy was to develop tactile, earthy, evocative and very Australian images while at the same time providing guests and staff with essential information to easily navigate the environment. Our overiding aim was to create and maintain a consistent 'Kooralbyn" look to all aspects of the resort The Result: After we finalised over 300 separate design projects including 2 sign system packages, The Kooralbyn was named the best 'New Tourist Development' at the national tourism awards.
